This poisonous white solid, known as Lead Acetate, was used in dyeing cotton and in making enamels and varnishes. It is made by treating Lead Oxide with acetic acid. Like other lead compounds, it is very toxic. Lead acetate is soluble in water and glycerin. Sugar of lead has also been used to treat poison ivy, as an astringent in diarrhea, and as a wet dressing in certain dermatitis’s.

We have preserved here, two antique Sugar of Lead labels from two different drug stores. The first, clearly marked Poison with a skull and cross bones, measures 2.25” Wide x 1.375” High. It was distributed by Lewis Drug and Seed Store, a Rexall Store in Tuskegee, Alabama. Their motto was “We Deliver Promptly”. You only needed to give them a call at Phone 131.
