Avocado Company was the packer and shipper from La Habra, California.

In 1926 a postman named Rudolph G. Hass decided to try his hand at growing avocados on a 1.5 acre plot in La Habra, California, that he’d used all his savings to purchase. Hass bought several experimental seedling trees to plant. Once the trees reached a sufficient size, Hass attempted to graft different avocado varieties onto them, a common practice that speeds up fruit production. However, one tree proved resistant to grafting, so Hass planned to cut it down. But his children talked him out of it, because they liked the taste of that particular tree’s fruit.

The spared tree turned out to produce abundant fruit with great nutty taste. It resisted damage during travel, had a very long shelf life and year-round growing season. In short, Rudolph Hass was producing avocados with unique commercial advantages. In August 1935, he obtained a patent for his new avocado variety, which he named after himself, Hass. Rudolph Hass’ patent expired in 1952, the year he died.

Today the Hass has become the “super avocado.” It accounts for 95% of the avocado production in California. When you see its action you will understand why. This rocket is a reproduction of an original 1960s tin toy manufactured by Holdraketa in Hungary. Standing 15" tall, when you rev up the friction powered clockwork mechanism and let it go, the rocket runs until it hits an object (like the wall) and the depression of the tip activates a spring loaded mechanism that raises the rocket up to a vertical position. The door then opens, a ladder drops down, and you see the astronaut in the doorway. All this is mechanical, brilliant!

The tin rocket measures 15" Tall x 4.5" Wide and comes in a colorful box. This is a must have for every collector!

$22.95

It also contains Quinine which comes from the bark of the cinchona tree growing in the rain forest of the Andes. Interestingly the product today still contains saccharin and quinine; there is just no blatant warning on the labels. Way to stick to your guns, Schweppes.

The company really has an interesting history. In 1783, Jacob Schweppe, a young Swiss watchmaker, perfected an inexpensive way to produce carbonated mineral water. In 1790 he entered into a joint venture with pharmacist Henry Gosse, engineer Jacques Paul, and his son Nicholas to form Schweppe, Paul & Gosse in Geneva. Schweppe moved to London in 1792 to establish the company's English operations, and the next year the partnership dissolved, but he retained the London business. In those days, aerated water was believed to have medicinal value, and Schweppe's brand was popular because it had a higher level of carbonation than its competitors. In 1799 Schweppe sold a 75 percent interest in his business and decided to retire. The company, however, continued to use the Schweppe name, which was later changed to Schweppes.

In 1834 the company was sold again to William Evill and John Kemp-Welch whose descendants would be with the company until 1950. In the 1870s Schweppes started selling ginger ale and tonic water, now its most famous product, in response to a demand from Britons returning from India who had developed a taste for the solution of quinine, sugar, and water they had drunk there as a malaria preventative.

Jumping forward, in 1968, Watkinson, chairman of Schweppes met with confectioner Cadbury’s Chairman Adrian Cadbury at a trade show and found that they had similar concerns about competing with the huge U.S. companies. Schweppes and Cadbury began merger talks and reached an agreement in January 1969. The new company, Cadbury Schweppes PLC is one of the oldest and largest family-run businesses in the world today. The Sedatole and Cheracol labels measure 2.5” Wide x 2.25” Tall and both contained Codeine, so there is a warning that it might be habit forming. This small mystery can be answered by an ad we found in the State College News on April 20, 1928. It was for A.G. Blichfeldt, Ph.G., Cut-Priced Druggist, located at 373 Madison Avenue at the corner of Dove. It indicated “Prescriptions A Specialty” and had the main telephone number as 1279. Schuyler was successful in his attack largely because of his wonderful relations with the Indians of the Five Nations.

Schuyler served as governor of New York from July 1719 to September 1720. The milk was distributed by United Milk Products Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio, and dates to the 1920s. It features a lovely delicate illustration of Helen of Troy on either side as a background for the text. The center of the label has a scene of a farmer herding his cows down a hill with a powerful mountain range in the background. Under that is its slogan, “The Best Ole Bossy’s Got”, poor Bossy. This vintage label is really dramatic with its teal, black, and white colors meant to evoke purity and cleanliness.

Evaporated milk, or dehydrated milk as it is sometimes called, is a canned product that has had 60% of the water removed from fresh milk. Back in the 1800s a wealthy businessman, T.C. Bates, decided to bottle the spring water from Quabaug Spring. He also spearheaded the installation of water pipes and a town reservoir in North Brookfield, which is about 20 miles from Worcester, Massachusetts. In those days it was common for shallow wells to become contaminated and the people got sick. T.C. sold his bottled water from a horse-drawn wagon throughout town. To expand he hired a New York advertising company who designed the labeling and featured King Phillip in the labels and advertising, absent from this label. Bates continued to run the company until his death in 1912.

I found an interesting passage in the Annual report of the State Board of Health of Massachusetts from 1901 describing Quabaug Spring. “Situated in a small valley about 800 feet south of Bates Street. The water-shed is uninhabited except that there are two houses and a barn situated at a considerable distance from the spring which may drain towards it. Water is collected in a stone reservoir 10 feet square and 8 feet deep, situated in a bottling house. Water is pumped from the spring into a small wooden tank from which the bottles in which the water is distributed are filled. Sold in Worcester and Springfield.” Quabaug, by the way, means Red Water.

I found an old advertising booklet (not included in sale) for Quabaug Spring Water indicating that “It will improve your digestion, purify your blood, stimulate in many ways your whole system, and prove healthful, wholesome and life-giving.” What more can be said.

WE GUARANTEE OUR LABELS TO BE AUTHENTIC AND AS DESCRIBED!

$0.85

The label measures 4.3” Wide x 3.4” High, is in mint condition, and dates to probably 1970.

There is a very interesting story about the company name. Domenick, Giuseppe and Felice Cusolito founded Prospect Hill Bottling and Soda Water Co. in 1914. When Domenick went to register his new company, which would be producing Prospect Hill Ginger Ale, the Clerk at the Secretary of State’s office suggested that they use a shorter name and asked, “Isn’t that where the Tower is?” Tower Ginger Ale was born. With prohibition of the 1920s, Root Beer was a cool, thirst quenching drink on a hot day and quickly became a substitute for beer that was no longer available.
During the early stages of the company, Domenick realized the success of other "tonic" companies was attained by specializing in one product. He decided to organize his company in the same way, specializing in root beer. At the time, drinks like root beer and ginger beer were usually home made. With the assistance of a local pharmacist, Domenick tinkered with his root beer recipe to come up with a distinctive product. In the beginning all of the drinks were bottled in clear glass bottles, but because of Prohibition beer breweries closed there doors. One local brewery had a warehouse full of 7 ounce beer bottles and Domenick volunteered to remove them. Tower Root Beer’s brown bottles were born.
After World War II, Domenick’s three sons (Richard, Jack and Paul) took over the management of the company.
